Young Family
THE SIGN OF THE CROSS
This month, the prayer we focused on with the young children was the Sign of the Cross. As Fr. Tim describes it, it is a "prayer in motion." Little (and big!) ones who are still figuring out their right and left can struggle to make the motions correctly, and then we add words to remember to say. Click here for a simple, fun craft to make together to help your child learn this important, basic prayer.
BAPTISM
At October Parish Intergenerational Faith Formation, as we explored the idea of holiness in everyday life, we learned that it all begins with Baptism, when we become children of God and members of Christ's Church. This short video tour of a Catholic church starts with the font and many of the things that the children saw and explored as they visited our Church during the FF session. Watch all the way to the end for a good reminder of who the Church really is!
Turning to God in hard Times
During the past month or so, there have been several tragic happenings in our country and world. Hurricanes, a mass shooting, and wildfires are just the tip of the iceberg. For an article with advice about talking about and dealing with hard times as a family, click here.
Share Stories of baptism
During the October PIFF sessions, the children were encouraged to ask their parents about their Baptism. Take some time to talk about that special day. Find some photos and artifacts related to the celebration that you can look at together. Here are some ideas:
- Look at photos of the special day and people you shared it with
- Take out the baptismal garment, candle, certificate and any other mementos of the day
- Who was there? Who are your child's godparents?
- Was it a sunny day or snowy? Windy or calm? What do you remember?
- Did anything funny happen? What stories do you remember?
- Talk to your child about why you chose to have them baptized. Share your hopes for them as they grow in faith
LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES! (BUT WHICH ONES??)
I just saw another chagrined parent post on Facebook... "We thought it would be a good family movie to rent, but...." Or how about those times when your older kids are invited to go to a movie, and you have no idea whether or not it's appropriate?
Well, we parents can find a little help from Catholic News Service. They regularly review current movies, and they have an extensive archive of older movies you and your kids might encounter on DVD or streaming. So, next time you are trying to figure out something to watch as a family or whether to allow one of your children wants to go to a movie, go here to find reviews and assessments of what ages movies are appropriate for.
